Colson House; The Most Wonderful Guest House in Brighton

I was very kindly invited to Colson House in return for a review.  However, as always, all opinions are entirely my own.

I bloody love Brighton. We try to get there once a year as it’s just so different from the life we live here and it’s not far from us at all. I’ve stayed in a few different places over the years from The Grand due to my love of Quadrophenia, to the ibis for a fun films on the beach campaign, The Royal Albion opposite the pier and, of course, the Travelodge!

But never have I stayed somewhere so welcoming as Colson House in Kemptown. A lot of the housing here is in a very tradition Regency style and a few Victorian properties thrown in for good measure, which gives the area such a lush feel! A lot of the properties in Kemptown have been converted into flats or bars so the area has a really quirky feel. Obviously, Colson House, a 200 year old Regency home, hasn’t been turned into flats or a bar, but a very welcoming guest house run by Billy and John with the resident dog, Zimba.

The Background

Colson House offers 9 rooms, each different from the next, all with en-suite bathrooms, 5-star linen and the most friendly welcome I think I’ve ever received!

The location was just perfect for all of the explorings we had planned, as it’s within walking distance of many famous Brighton attractions including Brighton Pier and the Royal Pavilion, the many unique shops, pubs, coffee shops and restaurants which cater for literally every taste you can imagine.

The Rooms

Hayley and I chose to stay in the stunning four poster room that had literally just been finished decorating in the week. No prizes for guessing why I wanted to stay in there!

The dark blue walls are very luxurious and the room was just so spacious.

We had a lovely little seating area where we sat and did a little work when we needed to, and where we drunk our Prosecco before our first evening meal out. There was a dresser table with a large flat screen TV and our hot drink making facilities. We had ample wardrobe and drawer space to store all of our clothes, shoes and toiletries. We even had a small fridge that we kept the previously mentioned Prosecco in and our other drinks in too. It’s rare you get a fridge in your room these days so this was a very welcome addition!

Our bed was just so comfortable, in fact, it was so comfortable I was out like a light without even snoring for once! The bedding was soft, the mattress was just how I like them and I awoke both mornings feeling refreshed and ready to cram in all that we had planned. I’m super fussy with pillows and the ones we had on the bed were also part of the reason I slept so well whilst being at Colson House.

There were so many little details that really did make a difference; the little packets of Love Heart sweets on the towels on the bed, the maps that Billy had drawn on to show places he thought we would like and maybe hadn’t visited before, the USB plug sockets, the fresh flowers in the hallway, and the art deco touches in the decor that give such a classy atmosphere.

The Bathroom

Our en-suite bathroom was really spacious, filled with lots of natural light and was very clean and tidy. We had a large shower, plenty of towels and a big mirror that was great for putting our make-up on in as the light from the window was streaming in.

The Atmosphere

We loved every minute of our stay, and we were so reluctant to check out. I can’t put anything to fault at all. Our hosts really were beyond helpful and were there every time we had a question or a request. All of the recommendations they gave were top notch and I have a little list of others we didn’t get time to visit for when we return.

Zimba was so well behaved you wouldn’t even know there was a resident dog there as he stays well out of the way unless you’re dog crazy like we are and were on the floor with him encouraging him to play!

We really were made to feel so at home and have discussed our summertime return to see more of the Brighton we haven’t seen before thanks to wonderful recommendations from our new found friends. If you’re going to Brighton, you simply must stay at Colson House!
