Dizziness When Exercising: Should You Be Worried? *

*Collaborative post.

When you exercise, it is important to listen to your body and watch out for any potential problems. Dizziness after a workout is one of the signs that people often ignore, but it could be an indication of a serious problem, so you should always get it checked out and consider what is causing it.

If you feel very dizzy and lightheaded every time you work out, you could be making mistakes with your workout or your diet, but you could also have an underlying health condition. These are some of the potential causes of dizziness when exercising.

A Weak Heart

When you exercise, your heart increases its pumping action and the blood vessels in your body dilate to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to tissues. It is essential for healthy people to be able to pump enough blood during activity, but some people naturally have decreased stamina because of disease (that’s why cardiovascular diseases like coronary artery disease and peripheral arterial disease are called “silent killers” because they mostly cause no symptoms until it is too late). If you feel dizzy after exercising, especially if this occurs suddenly or unexpectedly, it could mean that there isn’t enough blood being pumped by the heart. So, if you notice this symptom, it’s vital that you see a cardiac specialist (like this one at dralasady.com.au) to get yourself checked right away. If you are relatively healthy then there is probably another cause, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Pushing Yourself Too Hard

Another reason for feeling very dizzy after a workout is that you are pushing yourself too hard. Exercising at your maximum capacity does not allow sufficient time for the body to adjust. This is a common problem when people start a new routine and they want to get the most out of it. A good way to avoid this problem is by following a consistent exercise plan which includes both low-intensity and high-intensity workouts. You need to build up slowly too, especially if you are new to exercising.

Not Eating Or Drinking Enough

Working out when you are hungry or thirsty can make you feel light-headed. Many people don’t realize they are hungry until their blood sugar is low, which causes weakness and dizziness in some cases. Also, lack of water can cause dehydration which results in feeling faint. So, before exercising, have a small snack with some carbs and protein to give yourself energy to avoid this problem. Make sure that you drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout too.

Vertigo

Most people think that vertigo is only related to heights, but that isn’t the case. It actually means that you feel like the room is spinning around you. It can happen because of inner ear problems, anxiety and panic attacks, and after exercise. If you are performing a repetitive motion, like cycling or running on a treadmill, your brain may still think you are moving when you stop, and this causes vertigo. If you have ruled out the other causes, this might be your issue. The best way around this is to gradually slow down your pace before stopping, so your body has a transition period. If you struggle to fit exercise into a busy schedule, make sure allow enough time to wind down slowly.

Dizziness when exercising isn’t always dangerous, but it can be, so don’t take any chances if it is something you experience on a regular basis.
