Designing A Modern Home From Scratch *

*Collaborative Post.

If you are considering designing your very own home, and you are hoping for it to look as modern as possible, there are a lot of considerations you will want to make. The truth is that designing a home can be incredibly tricky and even stressful if you are not careful, and you might find that there are a lot of different changes you need to make along the way. Because of that, it’s good to be aware of some of the major things you have to know about.

In this article, we are going to take you through many of the essentials behind designing a modern home from scratch. As long as you are thinking about all of the following, you should find that you are going to be much more able to make your new home look incredible, and to feel how you want it to feel as well.

Fitting The Plot

One of the major things you have to consider when you are designing any home is the plot of land that you have to work with. If you are not careful, you can easily end up thinking too big – or even too small – and not being able to make good use of the plot you have. So it’s vital that you are firstly making sure to get hold of a plot of land that seems suitable for what you want to achieve, and that you are doing all you can to make good use of that space once you have it in place. Fitting the plot will ensure that the whole project is much more successful, and that you are a lot more likely to be happier with the results, so that is something to think about from the very start.

Finding Ideas

The whole ideation process can be surprisingly tricky to get right, so it’s something that you are going to want to think about early on. The sooner you start trying to find ideas for your modern home, the bigger an arsenal of plans you are going to have, and that will mean that you are much more likely to flesh out some amazing plans you can be very happy with. So where can you actually look for ideas for your home?

One place is to go online and look at interior design blogs. That is always going to give you some ideas, and you can do a similar thing for the exterior plans as well. You might also want to seek out some magazines or periodicals around this too, which can be surprisingly effective in giving you a lot of amazing ideas as well. Of course, there is also the option of going around to people’s homes and taking it all in as you do so. In these various ways you can get the inspiration you need to start designing your home.

Once you have a good number of ideas in place, it’s time to think about whittling them down to the ones that you really like.

Hire An Architect

It is definitely a wise move to hire your own architect, for the simple reason that they are going to know what you need to do in order to achieve the results you actually want to achieve. Without an architect, conversely, you are going to find that it’s much more difficult to get what you want to actually happen in the real world, which is obviously what we are trying to make happen here. However, it’s not simply a case of going for the first architect you happen to come across. You need to make sure that you are actually actively seeking one who seems to be good for your project in particular.

How can you be sure of that? One way is to look for the architects of buildings that you have seen which you admired. Getting clear on that should mean that you can find some names who are going to be suitable for your project as well. Then it’s just a case of again whittling down until you find someone you can work with. At that point, going through the plans with them and talking about what you want should make it very clear whether or not they are a suitable choice for you.

Within your architectural plans, you will need to ensure all the drainage is correct as to not have any blockages, but to also ensure your plans can be passed. If your architect needs help, using Drainage Consultants Express Drainage Solutions (or similar drainage experts in your area) can be such a help so you get it right first time.

It’s good not to rush this, because having the right architect is one of the most invaluable aspects to this whole project. Once you have them, you will know it, and you can start to actually get some ideas down on paper and into the form of blueprints.

Draw Up Plans

That part of the process is also hugely important, of course, for obvious reasons. After all, you have to have plans which are clear and marked out well, and which are likely to be able to come to fruition. Your architect will know what works and what doesn’t, so working closely with them is essential here. But you should also make sure that the plans are actually what you want, rather than simply going along with something because it seems easy for instance. Actually holding out for the results you want is going to mean that you are much more likely to be happy with the home.

Bear in mind here that there are certain elements to be aware of if you want to have a home that you consider to be modern. For instance, modern homes generally have more open spaces than closed rooms, so that is something to consider incorporating. You might also want to have enough room for any signature pieces that you have already picked out, or which you might already have in your possession to include in your new home. A modern home is also likely to have natural elements on display, and thinking carefully about exposing some of the structure of the building itself can help with that too. All in all, take care when you draw up the plans, and don’t be afraid to revisit and edit them as necessary.

Choosing Your Materials

We have just hinted at one of the major aspects to a modern home, which is that the materials are often of a natural variety. This is something that you will really want to bear in mind, as it is an easy and effective way to make your home have the kind of modern effect you really want. So you should take care in choosing your materials, and there are many parts of the interior and exterior of the home to think about as you are doing so.

For instance, let’s think about flooring. An obvious choice here for a modern effect is wood or something similar. You might also want to consider granite or slate in the kitchen and bathrooms. For the countertops, marble or granite are good options, and will provide a sleek and attractive alternative. There are also many styles of balustrades for your home, and a good natural material to use here would be glass. As for furniture, again there is plenty to be said for having lots of wood, although you might also want other options to help make the space as comfortable as possible of course. Just make sure you do choose enough natural materials.

Keeping Costs Down

As you plan your modern home, you will need to try and keep a tally of how much you are likely to spend along the way. This will enable you to have a reliable budget that you can then follow closely, and which is going to be as trustworthy as possible towards the end of the completion of the project. Keeping the costs down as you do so is also hugely important, so that is something to think about as well. How can you do that? There are a few vital ways.

For instance, you should try to source materials in bulk wherever possible, and be sure to shop around as you do so as well. It can also be helpful to think carefully about who you hire to construct the place, which is something that can be surprisingly time-consuming to work out. However, it will be worth it when you find that you have not spent anywhere near as much as you thought you might on your home, so that is something to think about. All in all, keeping costs down in this manner is going to be as simple as you would hope.

Find Your Signature

A final point that might help to make your home truly unique and modern: find your signature. That means that you need to try and find something that is going to help you make your home look like yours, and each room to look its very best. It might be a particular hue, material or anything else, or even an object used as a focal point. However you do it, just make sure that you can make use of your signature throughout the home. This is going to make for a much more amazing modern home.
