Do you know About Mesothelioma? *

I’m gonna be honest, I had no idea what Mesothelioma was until I was asked to talk about it on my blog to bring awareness to my readers. I thought, if I’m going to sit and talk to you guys about it then I had best do some research and share some facts with you!

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of your internal organs, predominately the lining of your lungs and chest wall. Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma may include shortness of breath due to fluid around the lung, a swollen abdomen, chest wall pain, cough, feeling tired, and weight loss, which can be very regular things to have, so it’s not often obvious! These symptoms typically come on slowly, so if you have any of these over a prolonged period of time, I’d pop to your doctor just to be safe. It can often take around 20 to 50 years for the disease to begin!

Greater than 80% of mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and most tradesmen have no idea that they are at risk. The greater the exposure, obviously, the greater the risk. As of 2013, about 125 million people have been exposed to asbestos at work, and I wonder how many of them know they are at risk?! High rates of disease occur in people who produce products from asbestos, work with asbestos, or work in buildings containing asbestos.  You can even be a slight risk if you are washing the clothing of someone who worked with asbestos or simply just living with them; something to think about, right?
