As mentioned at least 100 times already this year, the staycation has become one of favourite forms of travel as we really do take the wonderful country we live in for granted. We try and travel around the UK as much as we can of a weekend so we have a few spots that we either visit time and time again to escape the real world or places that are on our list to return to as soon as we can!
Here’s that list, so take your pick for your next staycation!
This has to be our home away from home as we’ve spent almost 60 days there since our first visit in September 2015. We head there every January and it’s the perfect escape to kick the year off with. There are plenty of lengthy walks, so many local breweries, amazing restaurants and lots of quaint shops within the local town of Bishop’s Castle. If you fancy not leaving at all then the Barn is filled with all the best mod cons, a hot tub that we’ve watched both the sunrise and sunset from and stargazed, and more films in the rack that would take far longer to get through than a weekend. The view from the front door just never gets old and I think I could quite happily live there!
We reviewed North Star Club in February 2017 and within a month of getting home, we had booked our return! We booked a total chill out trip between Christmas and New Year as we wanted some time away from the hustle and bustle of the festive period. On our first visit, we fell totally in love with the place, the style of slow living that it introduced to us, and the quality time we got to spend together. Being able to BBQ for every meal is such enjoyment for me and having our own log burner to keep us warm is literally the dream! Just remember to take some games to entertain yourself as there’s no TV or Wi-Fi and minimal phone signal!
We’ve only been back from The Queensberry a month and we’ve already discussed a possible return for my 30th birthday later in the year. The luxury and size of the room exceeded all of our expectations, the food was some of the best we’ve ever had in a hotel; it really was like no other staycation we’ve been on. All of the staff were so friendly, we loved not having to worry about where to park our car thanks to the valet parking, and we really didn’t want to check out.
A snowy visit back in 2013 got me still thinking about this place; it’s not that often I go somewhere and almost six years later I want to go back! The hotel has played roles in Bridget Jones’ Diary, Layer Cake, Goldfinger, and many more well-known films so it’s a great place to take a film buff, so that’s my excuse to take Mike! The food, created by head chef, Chris Wheeler, was divine and the whole hotel was filled with history and lust worth decor. The perfect place for a romantic getaway!
This happens to be the only staycation hotel that is outside of England that made my list and that’s down to its fabulous location, the great choice of food and the welcoming staff. Our room was traditionally decorated with a feeling of cosy luxury and the views over the local farm just set it off making us slide back into that slow living life that we love to experience when away from home. We used the spa, we drunk good wine and watched films before; not a bad Sunday night at all! We’d love to return with better weather and make the most of being in the middle of the Brecon Beacons.
Another trip from back in 2013, that has got me wanting to return is the wonderful Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds. The spa was so very plush, the deep tissue massage was exactly what I needed at that time, and the 11 courses at dinner meant for a really good nights sleep. It also helped that the settings were stunning, the architecture was how my dream home would look and the staff were there for every need we had and more! It truly was a foodie dream hidden away from the crowds of the busy London life we usually live.
