How you can Save Energy by making your Home Smart

*This is a collaborative post.

Climate change is all over the news at the moment. We are all beginning to see the effects of it and whilst corporations and governments need to take action, it’s also up to us to do what we can. Lowering your carbon footprint can be difficult and it’s hard to know where to begin with so much information out there. Often it can seem that different sources are contradicting each other, and you may feel confused at how you can make any sort of change. One sure way to save energy and lower our carbon footprint is through smart homes.

The first step is smart lighting, you can purchase LED candle bulbs from here. Smart lighting can work in different ways. It can come on through sensors or it can be controlled by a separate device such as your phone or voice command device such as an Alexia. LED bulbs are more efficient anyway, but it also means that if someone has forgotten to turn the lights off you can turn them off from wherever you are.

Another way to conserve energy is by making your heating smart. This will allow you to keep your home at the perfect temperature without wasting heat. If you are in and out of the house you can turn it on before you get home rather then leaving the heating on all day. You can also control the heat through smart blinds which can be set to block out the sun when it hits your windows. This could save you from using as much air conditioning.

Most appliances in your house can be made smart. From your dishwasher to your microwave. This can allow you to track their performance and how much energy they are using. Smart appliances are becoming more numerous and cheaper. Something that was once for a rich few is now available to more and more people.

You can even make your garden smarter. One big concern in the battle against climate change is how much water we all use. Smart sprinkler systems are available and will only give your garden how much water it needs. They are customizable so you can give them information about what is in your garden and where.

Smart homes are the future but do not come without their problems. You might be concerned about the security of your smart homes as they have been known to be hacked into. Another issue might be linking everything up to one device to keep it simple and efficient. However, major breakthroughs are happening all the time and it is easy to see why more people are opting to go smart.

According to Neeeco’s Mass Save Home Energy Audit, If you are trying to save energy by making your home smart then make sure you do your research and get some solid advice. Take your time and find what works for you. There is potential to track how much energy you are saving and make a real difference to your carbon footprint.
