The notion of home security is something that everybody’s got their own opinion of. The toughest thing these days is the higher level of crime, but we’re still relying on older methods of securing our property. We’ve got to be more robust and ahead of the curve when it comes to securing your property.
With this in mind, here are a few things that every home should consider.
If you’ve got large patio doors that have a clear view from the streets or behind your garden, it’s critical that you secure these doors. Solid security doors can benefit from a variety of reinforcements, such as a strike plate and a deadbolt. But you should also think about securing that front door, especially as many burglars gain entry to the property through it. Get into the habit of inspecting every exterior door to make sure the frames are strong and the hinges are protected.
This has been a proven deterrent and if you are concerned that burglars sneak through your garden and you don’t want to annoy the rest of the street with your lights coming on and off, motion detector lighting is invaluable. The great thing is that if you’ve got hiding places in your garden, you can minimise them with motion detector lighting. When your home has a lot of shrubs and trees, these are the perfect places for burglars to hide. In addition to security lighting, you should trim bushes or opt for smaller versions.
The garage is fast becoming a popular entry point into people’s homes, and even if they cannot gain access to your home via the garage, if you use your garage as a storage space, it’s very likely you will see your gym and gardening equipment disappear. You need to lock all of the doors to the garage, and also think about keeping the garage door opener in the home. A lot of people keep the garage door opener in their cars, but a smart garage door opener can make a big difference here. You could also install a driveway alarm.
Securing your home should also be about securing your Wi-Fi network. Your wireless network is going to have all of your personal and financial details, so make sure that you enable WPA or WPA2 encryption, a firewall, and hide your home network. A network name such as “Bob’s Wi-Fi” is only asking for trouble!
If you are leaving the property for long periods of time, and you have concerns about your precious items, a high-quality safe is going to give you that extra peace of mind. When it comes to finding the right safe, select the right size, but also look for ones that have redundant locks. You may also want to decide if a portable safe is best for you or one that is anchored to the ground, especially if you’re looking to protect family heirlooms.
There is a lot that we need to consider whether you have moved to a bigger home recently or a new area. But if you want to make your home more secure, these are some simple things that will make a big difference.
