Our four-legged friends love us so much that they want to be with us 24/7/365, and while travelling with pets isn’t the hardest thing in the world – it does mean a lot of extra expenses and a limit to the places you can stay. So, while in theory, it is nice to take them with you, it’s not always the most cost-effective or easiest thing to do.
But there are things you can do to help prepare your dog for you being away for a little bit longer than usual.
There are probably a few options when it comes to where your dog will stay. They might stay with friends and family, they may stay home with a pet sitter visiting regularly, or they may go to a dog kennels.
All of those options are great, but if you do decide on the kennels, it is a good idea to arrange a visit once or twice with your dog before you leave them there. So when they arrive and will be staying for a few days or more – they will be familiar with the smells and the people.
Meeting the staff will also give you the confidence that you have picked the right place for them and that you can use that location in the future too.
If your pet has separation anxiety, then it is a really good idea to work with a dog therapist in the months leading up to the trip. It will help you to understand the triggers and make sure that the pet sitter or kennels have the right tools for handling them.
The training that is needed to make sure their anxiety is at an all-time low will take time, so it is important to factor that into your plans.
It is common practice for people to take a jumper when they go and pick up their puppy, something that immediately gives them your scent. Over time, their whole house will be a familiar, safe space to them – and that is much due to the scent.
When you go away, and they are going to a kennel or a friend or family member, it is a good idea to pack up some things for them to take with them. One of your jumpers or a t-shirt, the treats they love the most (even the extra special ones), and some of their bedding.
As you and/or your family get more excited about your vacation, your dog will sense that. And you might find that they seem to have more energy than usual. In the fest days before you leave and before they go on their own little holiday – take more walks than normal. Make sure that you are helping your dog burn off as much energy as possible. It will help keep them calm and relaxed so you can pack in peace.
