This post is a collaboration with TV Licensing (a trademark of the BBC), but all thoughts and experiences are my own.
When I tell you that there is so much going on in my life right now, I’m not playing! We’ve just had our wedding weekend and mini moon, plus a full house renovation that’s got us making decisions left right and centre, prepping to host our very first Christmas and New Year, and of course, working all hours as a freelancer to pay for all of this fun! With all of this going on, we’ve been making sure we have time carved out to rest and chat about the mundane stuff to keep us sane.
So when I was asked to take part in the BBC TV Licensing Rest & Connect Campaign, it got me thinking not only about how much sitting and watching Rev & Taskmaster are getting us to step off from the world and take half an hour to an hour to enjoy moments to ourselves, but how much watching TV is a part of everyone’s lives. I’ve certainly got my fair share of TV memories that I’m going to share…
Classic Christmas
Thinking back to when I lived at home, some of my fondest Christmas memories are once the big meal is over, we’re all full to the brim. All the guests had gone home, and it was just Mum, Dad & me sitting on the sofa watching Christmas Day films on TV. Watching Elf has always been our favourite, but we’re also quite partial to a golden oldie like White Christmas or It’s a Wonderful Life. I know lots of people exhaust themselves on Christmas Day, but my family have always been good at ensuring we all have time to decompress whilst eating turkey sandwiches.
New Traditions
Sticking with the Christmas memories, in 2022 when we moved into our first house, we started a new tradition of getting a local takeaway, opening a bottle or two of wine, and watching Klaus followed by The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse and as we weren’t too tired, we sang along to The Nightmare Before Christmas too. We did the same in 2023, and we are hoping to keep this tradition running this year, as long as the turkey is cooked, and the potatoes are peeled ready for hosting the next day!
Lunchtime Games
When it comes to lunchtime, Mike and I will watch House of Games and Pointless, they bring just the right balance of fun and focus to our weekday breaks when we’re both at home. Both shows let us switch off from work stress, which Mike experiences a little more than I do while keeping our minds ticking over. We genuinely play along like we are contestants and get eliminated if we don’t hit the best scores. Not to brag, but we’ve gotten pretty good at it!
Lockdown Escape
During lockdown, we found it quite hard to escape from everything that was going on in the world with the daily news updates and our first stint both working from home, that we looked for things that were pure comedy gold to watch and immerse ourselves in. We fell totally in love with People Just Do Nothing, Two Doors Down and The Young Offenders, binge-watching all episodes, plus we spent hours rewatching and laughing at Friday Night Dinner, This Country and Ghosts.
It’s amazing just how much watching TV plays such a huge role in my life, even when I say ‘Oh I don’t watch much TV’!
