Winchester; Where To Stay *

As part of my wonderful Winchester series, I’m kicking off with where you stay as there’s plenty of options but I think I might have just found the best location for all of your weekend trip needs. The Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel is situated next door to the stunning Winchester Cathedral with its own car park which was super handy as we drove there as it as a little quicker than taking the train.

All of the staff that we came in to contact with made us feel very welcome and made our stay very easy.

On arrival, we were a little too early for our room to be ready but that was no issue as we had plans to head out on a few tours around town to make sure we saw everything! We left our car in the car park and came back to a ready room just after lunch.

The Room

Upon opening the door, we were greeted with a huge room complete with large bathroom, seating area with TV,  sofa and armchair, a dressing table and a huge four-poster bed. There was a large wardrobe that had our own ironing board,  iron,  spare bedding and plenty of space to store our coats and bags.

The bed was not only huge but super comfy too. We had huge fluffy pillows that your head sunk into when you laid down and a duvet that was enough to make myself into a human burrito and have plenty left for Mike too!

The Location

As mentioned, the hotel was next door to the Cathedral so as you can imagine the first thing I did was run to the window to check out our views and we were far from disappointed!

The hotel was really clean, really easy to find on the first arrival and breakfast could be had in the restaurant or in your room. We opted to head down to the restaurant and fill our boots there! There was a great selection of hot drinks, pastries, cereals, and a hot buffet. As ever I went straight in for the hot buffet as we rarely have anything other than scrambled egg on toast when it comes to having a hot breakfast at home. The dishes were constantly being refilled so all of the food was fresh from the kitchen and the selection was exactly what we wanted to start the day with.

The location allowed us to walk everywhere we wanted in minutes. With Winchester having everything we had planned to see so close to the Cathedral we managed to cram in so much and didn’t mind popping back to the hotel to drop a bag off or to grab a coat before dinner when the temperature dropped.

We had a great stay and it great to know our car was safe in the car park. We couldn’t have found a better location to call our Base for the 36 hours we called Winchester home.

Keep an eye out for the rest of the series over the next week.
