What is Considered as a Cosmetic?

A simple way to describe a cosmetic is basically anything that comes into contact with your skin, either if it is on your face or your body. One of the ingredients that you should avoid when it comes to buying cosmetics is parabens. These are chemicals that are used in over 75% of skincare products and cosmetics and have been used for a number of years because they make products last a lot longer and can kill bacteria that grow that could make someone ill, this might seem like a good thing, however, it has been discovered that parabens could be connected to developing breast cancer.

Another ingredient that you should avoid when it comes to buying cosmetics is phthalates. These are also chemicals used that can cause some serious damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs and also damage to the reproductive system.

The next ingredient to avoid when buying cosmetics is Toluene, again, this is made up of chemicals and should be avoided because it can cause damage to the skin, eyes and the fumes given off this product can cause someone to be sick, give them a headache, cause unconsciousness and even death if inhaled too much.

Another ingredient to avoid is fragrance which can be quite misleading as you might think that this is referring to the scent. Synthetic fragrances can often be hidden in the ingredients and they can cause things like lung disease.

Look out for Triclosan which is an Endocrine Disruptor. This ingredient is a skin irritant and has been known to make bacteria antibiotic resistant.

Synthetic Colours

When choosing cosmetics, try to avoid synthetic colours that include the letters D and C before the name of the colour. On items like lipstick, these colours could end up in our stomach.

This ingredient is deemed carcinogenic and can give skin reactions. You might find this ingredient in nail polish or shampoo.

When you have a cosmetic with sodium lauryl sulphate inside of it, it can interact with other chemicals to affect the skin, the lungs and the kidneys so avoid this at all costs.

Chemical sunscreens

When buying sunscreen, try to avoid those with PABA and homosalte as this can absorb UV rays into the skin and cause serious issues down the line.

Propylene Glycol

This small organic alcohol compound is used as a skin conditioning agent and it can cause dermatitis or hives if you are not careful. Try to avoid this.
