What to Know Before Moving Location for a Job *

*Collaborative post.

When a job opportunity arises in another city or another country, you have a lot of questions to ask yourself. Maybe you like the sound of the job but you’re not sure about making the move. There are lots of things to consider and there are some steps you should take before you decide either way whether this opportunity is one that you want to take up. Read on now to find out more about all of this.

Consider Your Relationship First of All

First of all, you should consider what kind of impact this kind of move might have on your partner and the other people who are close to you. If your partner is not able to move with you because of their work commitments, will you be happy to maintain a long-distance relationship? These are all things that need to be considered and discussed openly.

Changes to the Cost of Living

Moving to a new place means that you might have to deal with a different cost of living. Where you work will dictate where you live, so just because this new job opportunity is giving you a pay rise, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be better off financially. It might be the case that the cost of living is higher, meaning that your pay rise will be cancelled out.

Research the Job and People Who Have Worked There Before

You should also take the time to consider whether this company that you’ll be working for is going to be the right fit for you. Do plenty of research and ensure you know what kind of environment you’re going to be working in. You should try to talk to some people who’ve worked there before to get some of the best insights.

Understand the Visa Laws

Understanding the visa laws that apply to you when you’re moving to a new place is going to be important too. Your company will be able to sponsor and should be able to help you get the work visa you need if you need one, but it’s something to look into. For many people in the UK and US, an Irish passport application is a good way to ensure EU work and settlement rights if eligible.

Who’s Covering Relocation Costs?

In many cases, if a company really wants you to work for them, they’ll be willing to cover your moving costs for you. You can’t overlook the fact that moving is expensive, and if you’re going to be covering those costs yourself, that’s a pretty big financial sacrifice to be made. Your employer should at least help towards the costs you’re going to incur.

As you can see, there are many things to consider and steps to take before you go ahead and accept or reject that job. But don’t let fear hold you back; sometimes the best opportunities and experiences come along when you’re willing to leave your comfort zone and try something new.
