A number of home renovations can help us to reduce our carbon footprint. But which one of these renovations has the best return on investment? There are a few different home improvements that can help you save money and save the planet. In fact, some of these eco-friendly renovations may even add value to your home – helping you to make more money if you decide to sell. Below are 5 examples.
Roof insulation
If your attic isn’t insulated, installing insulation could help greatly reduce heat loss, keeping your home warmer longer in winter and preventing you from using as much energy. Attic insulation can cost anywhere from £500 to £1,500 depending on the size of your attic and the type of insulation you choose. It will usually pay for itself within three years and after that you’ll be saving money. Roof insulation can also increase your property’s value by around 5% to 10% on average.
Solar panels
Solar panels allow you to harvest your own electricity from the sun rather than relying solely on the grid. With enough solar panels, it’s even possible to generate all your electricity from the sun – so you’ll never have to pay an energy bill again. Of course, you do need to consider the installation cost of these panels. On average, most homeowners spend £4,850 to £13,000 on a solar panel system and it takes 8 years for them to pay for themselves. After this however, you’ll make huge savings. Solar panels can also drastically increase the value of your home – anywhere between 4% to 14%, and potentially more in London.
Double glazing
You could be losing a lot of heat through your window if you have single pane windows. Double glazed windows can cut heat loss through windows by 50%. As a result, they can lead to great energy savings by keeping your home warmer longer. You can expect to pay £600 to £1,800 per window, so it’s usually best to focus on windows in rooms where you want to reduce heat loss the most (living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms). Double glazed windows take 20 to 30 years to pay for themselves, making them quite a slow investment, however they can also increase the value of your home by up to 10%, making them profitable if you plan to sell in the near future. This guide at The Spruce delves more into double glazed windows.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps help transfer heat from the air or ground, which in turn can be used to heat your home. Installing these pumps can greatly reduce your energy bills. As companies like All Seasons Energy state, you can also add as much £8000 to the value of your home by installing heat pumps. This makes them another worthy eco-friendly renovation to invest in.
EV charging station
Installing an EV charging station outside your property allows you to charge up an electric vehicle. EVs are becoming more common on the roads and are a much more eco-friendly alternative to petrol cars. They also cost much less to fuel – you’ll spend three to five times less per mile if you drive an electric car vs a petrol car. An EV charger also adds £3,000 to £5,000 on average to a property’s value.
