Glass tables come in all sorts of styles, and they’re popular because they bring a cleanness to your home interiors. Instead of a big wooden dining or coffee table, you have a glass one that doesn’t dominate the space as much and makes the room look more modern and minimalist. A glass tabletop also provides clear vision to what’s underneath, allowing you to really bring out a nice rug, carpet or hardwood floor. There are plenty of reasons to pick glass as your table of choice, though it does come with a significant drawback: maintenance.
Maintaining glass tables is a lot harder than maintaining other table materials because glass is more likely to show visible scratches, smudges, etc. It also catches the light and shows dust more than other tables, so what can you do to maintain yours so it always looks brand new?
Before we get into how you can avoid scratches, let’s address the elephant in the room: you’ve probably clicked on this post because your glass table already has a few scratches, and you’ve also probably not had the table for that long. It can happen, so the first port of call is to get rid of these scratches so the glass looks good as new.
You might be able to fix minor scratches by using a glass polishing compound, but if that doesn’t work, then you’ll call in a glass repair specialist who has the right tools for this type of job. They can use proper polishing machinery and other solutions to polish out deeper scratches and make it look like you just bought your table.
Now that your glass is clear again, you can prevent further scratches by protecting it with various covers. Always use coasters and mats if you’re placing cups and plates on glass tables. While you don’t want to cover up the entire table – as that defeats the point of getting a glass one – you should consider table runners or tablecloths when you’re eating (if you have a dining table, that is).
Alternatively, you should be able to find some sort of clear table protector to lay on top of the glass. It can literally be a thin film that you stick to the glass, which helps you avoid minor scratches and scrapes as you move things around.
Scratches often appear on glass tables because you don’t clean them as often as you should. You can get away with this on wooden tables, but even small bits of dust and debris are issues for glass. What happens is you don’t clean the tabletop, and then you brush something over it – say, you’re moving a book or a coaster – and the small debris scratches the glass.
Avoid this by dusting your glass tables pretty much every day and then giving them a proper clean with some good glass cleaner to avoid smears. This helps you keep it in the best condition, and it’ll look so clean and clear that you’ll almost forget there’s any glass there.
All in all it’s a case of getting rid of any existing scratches on your glass table, and then protecting it while cleaning it regularly to avoid future scratches. Glass maintenance doesn’t have to be challenging; you just need to be a bit more vigilant than you would with other table materials.
