Being a good friend doesn’t mean seeing them every week, or texting them every day to see what they are up to. As we get older we have our own lives to be worrying about, so, unfortunately we just don’t have time. Being a friend is about being there for somebody when they need it, rather than seeing them constantly. However, when they do need to call on you, you need to bring your A game! Here is how you can easily cheer up a close friend.
Have a chat.
Have a talk with them, and find out whether they want to talk about what it is that is bothering them. If they feel like it is better to talk it out, then listen and offer constructive advice. Give examples of similar situations you’ve been in yourself, that way they aren’t going to feel quite so alone. On the other hand, if they don’t want to talk about it, then don’t! There is no need to force them to tell you. Just chat about anything and everything that will keep their mind off it. Either way they will be grateful.
Get them a treat.
Brighten their day up by treating them! It could just be something small, like a Starbucks or a light lunch. Alternatively you could order a gift for them online. Take a look at Cuckooland’s luxury gift ideas for some inspiration! Some fancy chocolate or a fashion accessory will really make the difference to their mood. They’ll be touched that you thought of them. It’s a quick fix, and it works!
Know the right way to cheer them up.
If you know why they are feeling down, it will be easier to cheer them up. For example, if someone has split up with their partner, you could go and keep them company a few nights a week. They will appreciate you helping them with the loneliness, rather than dragging them out to town to try and find them someone new already! Another example is your friend may be feeling down about their weight. There’s only so many times you can say ‘but you look fine!’. Offer to start the gym with them instead! They will appreciate you actively giving them a hand rather than being all talk. Whatever your friend’s situation, there will always be a right and wrong way of trying to cheer them up. So tread carefully!
Reminisce together.
All friendships hold memories, no matter how long you have known each other for. Have a chat and a gossip about times that have gone by, hilarious, scandalous and unforgettable! You could even go back in time, visit the places you haven’t been in forever, and watch the movies you saw when they first came out at the cinema. This will really perk up a gloomy friend.
One day you might need this friend’s help, and hopefully they will as you have done such a good job with them!
Follow these tips and your friend will be back to their normal self in no time.
