Starting a blog and writing great content is all well and good, but you’re going to have to spend some time marketing your blog too. You need to get the word out there whenever you’ve posted a new article and make sure those readers keep coming back. Marketing my blog wasn’t something I did early on and I rather regret that!
Over my seven years waffling on this blog I’ve learnt a lot about the best ways to market your blog and here are a few of my favourites that are really easy to get involved with.
I was mainly using Twitter to rant about late trains, sharing ridiculous thoughts and chatting to mates, but I hadn’t thought about using it to share new posts. As soon as I realised I made sure my WordPress blog was attached to my Twitter and would post automatically. I noticed a quite increase in traffic to my site which really helped and made it all feel a little more worthwhile.
Another great way to use Twitter is to reply to people asking questions with your blog posts! I see a lot of people tweeting about places to eat in London, or destinations for their holidays so I will always reply with a blog post of mine to share my info with them and hopefully gain a new reader.
For those of you that don’t know, in short, Search Engine Optimisation is how you get your website ranked on the likes of Google, Bing and Yahoo. I’ve spoken a lot about blogger SEO basics in my time and it’s so important for bringing in organic traffic to your site which Google loves! SEO can take up to 4 to 6 months to start seeing results, so it is playing a bit of a waiting game, but whatever results you’re getting at 6 months should be considerably less than what you’re getting at 12 months so do keep at it. Yoast is a great plugin to help you get on the right track.
If you’re really taking it seriously, or work for a brand with a budget, then you could consider hiring an SEO agency like Click Consult.
I was SO late to the game with Pinterest for marketing; I was mainly using it for pinning future wedding ideas and travel wishlists. It wasn’t until this year that I started pinning my own blog posts and have seen a growth in traffic from there too! I saw a few other bloggers chatting about their growth in a bloggers group and thought it was something I really needed to get involved with as it’s so easy to do.
I use the site and app of Canva as they have templates made up that made it even easier. They are really easy to customise to your blog colour scheme, add photos to and edit the text so it doesn’t take long to make the graphics up.
