Winter has a way of reminding us that our houses can be just a little bit cosier. • Choose cosy textures. Forget stiff, sleek or smooth. Winter belongs to the fluffy, the fuzzy, the velvety and the knitted. Swap out the pillow covers. Drape a Sheerpa blanket over your couch and add a chunky knit throw that looks like it came straight off a Pinterest board. The more your space resembles a boutique cabin, the better.
• Think about the visuals. A room can be physically warm but look cold, and your brain will believe the light every time. This is where warm colours and soft tones come in. Even small swaps like brass accents, warm-toned lamps or earthy decor can shift your house from refrigerator chic to winter sanctuary.
• Think about your lighting. Winter gives us dark mornings, but it doesn’t mean you want to put the ceiling light on. Your lighting needs to work overtime to stop you from hibernating. Table lamps layered with floor lamps and a string of twinkle lights sprinkled somewhere unexpected can warm the room faster than turning up the thermostat. Bonus points for candles that smell like winter, too.
• Use some heat helpers. You don’t have to overhaul the heating system to get cosy. Small changes like a portable heater, thermal curtains, or an insulated window film can stop the warmth from escaping the house. If you’re feeling fancy, installing a fireplace insert or updating old radiators can provide both charm and heat.
