The lovely team from City Academy invited me over to try some of their courses so I jumped at the chance of a photography workshop! I LOVE doing photography and am totally self taught so I thought it’d be great to learn from others and pick up some new skills!
I had such a fantastic time and met some amazing people. The teacher. David Salas, is a true inspiration and just has the most incredibly creative eye!
City Academy are a London based creative arts and performance academy in London that specialise in classes for over 18s in singing, acting, dancing, musical theatre, comedy, filmmaking, screen, writing, life skills classes and fitness dance classes. There are classes to suit all levels of ability, and all times of the day to suit your daily timetable. They even host showcases at some of London’s most prestigious venues including Sadlers Wells and The Dominion Theatre.
We began our workshop at The Rag Factory in Brick Lane with a getting to know each other session and David teaching us a few basics we would need along the day. I learnt so much in this short time that I could of left happy after that, but that was only an hour into our day so we headed out to Whitechapel Market to take our first lot of photographs. The colours here were incredible and even the sun shone for a short amount of time!
The market was filled with characters working…
and shopping…
Even the items around the market proved great for snapping away at…
We were set a challenge to ask to photograph someone out on the street, this chap was my choice…
He was really chatty, and I took about 10 photos of him with his stall, but this was my favourite as I loved the cheeky look on his face! You can even see me in the reflection in his glasses!
We found an amazing back alley that was filled with treasures to photograph…
From here we hopped onto the train to Barbican to see the Untitled Visual Artists present Momentum, a carefully choreographed sequence of light, sound and movement, which responds to the unique space of the Curve.
I really want to go back here and experience it all over again. The lighting and sounds make you lose track of time and gives you a place to experiment with your photography.
Lastly we headed over to 1001 back on Brick Lane to share our top ten photographs, which is what I have shared with you today. I have saved my favourite until last…
This onion was placed between a wall and a pole so quite literally a rock and a hard place! It had started sprouting roots which really fascinated me as there was no earth near by! I really enjoy the focus of this picture!
Thank you City Academy for a fantastic day, I learnt so much and met some fantastic people! I can’t wait for my night time photography course with you next weekend!

I LOVE them! It’s such a shame they were lost on Saturday so we couldn’t see them as a group but I’m so relieved for you that you managed to get them back.
I think my favourite is the first one. I love those bright colours. It’s such a simple picture but so pretty and it could have been taken anywhere in the world.
Looking forward to seeing more of your photography!
Thank you Monica! I love the colour in that one too! So bold and summery! Super glad I got them back too thanks to Disk Drill! Looking forward to your post xxx
