Garden Jobs That Just Can’t Wait *

When it comes to gardening, there are some jobs that you are allowed to put off, but many of them simply can’t wait. If you don’t deal with them immediately, then you are setting yourself up for massive problems in the future.

Not sure what these jobs are? Then this guide is here to help you. We look at some of the chores that you have to get done at specific times of the year in your garden if you want to make the space a success.

Make sure your lawn is growing properly

One of the jobs that you can’t ignore is lawn care. If your lawn isn’t growing properly at the beginning of the year, then it’s likely that it will end up in a terrible state by the end of it.

You’ll want to start by giving it a light mow and then scarifying it. If you can apply seed in the early spring, that’s a good idea. Make sure you remove moss and thatch from the winter. If these are endemic, then hire professionals to get rid of them.

Tackle weeds and emerging plants early

At the same time, you’ll want to tackle weeds and emerging plants early. Don’t allow them to bloom so that they spread their seeds further. Snowdrops, hellebores, and crocuses are particularly vulnerable to being smothered. Dealing with weeds is usually best done before March in the Northern Hemisphere. If you don’t do it before this month, then their seeds will spread and then they’ll start to germinate, and you’ll have a problem for the rest of the year.

Deal with overhanging trees

If you have overhanging trees on your property, you’ll also need to take action. Sometimes tree removal is necessary.

If you don’t deal with problematic trees, then they will cause problems for you in the future. Branches will fall down, and trees can sometimes topple over, even onto your property, damaging the roof and the rest of the structure. This can be extremely expensive to fix.

Mulch your flower beds and borders

Another job you shouldn’t put off is mulching your flower beds and borders. You’ll want to apply between 5 and 10 cm of mulch around the plants that you want to promote to avoid them from having to compete with weeds. You should also mulch along the borders to keep the divisions between areas of your garden neat and tidy.

Mulching is best done in the late winter and early spring months. This prevents weeds from coming up in the first place.

Pruning roses

Pruning roses is another garden job that you don’t want to put off, especially in the late winter and early spring period. You should also prune other plants like hydrangeas, floribundas, and climbers in this period. These need pruning early on so that they can get a good start to the year. If you delay pruning too long, then you could cut off the flower buds.

So there you have it, some garden jobs that just can’t wait.
